Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is the chief lawyer and top law enforcement official for the State of Texas. As Attorney General, he is charged by the Texas Constitution and state law to defend the laws and the Constitution of the State of Texas, represent the State in litigation, and approve public bond issues.

In the course of his duties, Atty. Gen. Abbott has provided support for various pro-life measures and laws over the years:

Partial-Birth Abortion Ban
Led a coalition of 13 states in filing an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the constitutionality of the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban. The Court upheld the law.

Funding for Abortion Providers
Defended the constitutionality of the Rider 8 legislation, which prohibited state taxpayer dollars from going to organizations that are affiliated with abortion providers. (Planned Parenthood v. Sanchez)

Women’s Right to Know Act
Issued a legal opinion saying that abortion clinics cannot use prerecorded phone messages to fulfill their statutory notification requirement under the Women’s Right to Know law.

Issued a legal opinion saying clinics that perform medical abortions must be licensed, just like clinics that perform surgical abortions.

Sonogram Law
Currently defending the constitutionality of the sonogram law, which requires an abortion provider to conduct an ultrasound of an unborn child and offer to show the image to the mother prior to performing the abortion.

Choose Life Law
Currently administering funds raised by sales of Choose Life specialty license plates in order to raise awareness of adoption as an alternative to abortion.

Setting up an advisory committee to advise on how to use the funds.
