The 2010 Texas Rally for Life

On Saturday, January 23, 2010, crowds estimated at more than 3,000 marched from Republic Square up Congress Avenue to the South Steps of the State Capitol, a visible and audible witness to the pro-life spirit of Texas. Young, old, and in-between, they carried signs and banners, shouting chants and offering audible and silent prayers for a culture of life.

At the Capitol, they mingled with more than 40 pro-life organizations from across the state, a vibrant witness to the life-affirming services and grassroots efforts in the state. (See the Rally Steering Committee for the complete list.) After entertainment from singer and songwriter Jay Paul Roy, the crowds were treated to a program featuring some of the state’s top pro-life leaders and elected officials.

“I am so very proud of the well-deserved reputation Texas has as a pro-life state,” said keynote speaker Gov. Rick Perry, who has signed more pro-life bills into law than any other governor in Texas. “Proud of you all, for your willingness to stand here today in front of God, in front of everyone, and send a message to the pro-abortion forces of our nation.”

“The issue of life is not a partisan issue, nor is it a special property of any particular faith,” the governor told the crowd. “In the same way that this building behind us is the people’s house, our cause here today is the people’s issue.”

He enumerated several pro-life successes Texas has seen in recent years, including the 10-year anniversary of the parental notification act, which has seen a 32+% drop in the number of abortions performed on minors.

Emcee Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston) and Rep. Frank Corte Jr. (R-San Antonio), remarked on the sonogram legislation they authored during the 2009 legislative session.

Each of the elected officials on the program encouraged attendees to pray for and communicate with their elected officials and to do all they can to support pro-life candidates and legislation.

Carol Everett, CEO and founder of The Heidi Group and a former abortion facility owner, pointed out the contrast between the number of abortion facilities and the number of life-affirming pregnancy resource centers in the state -- 43 to 220.

Joe Pojman, Ph.D., executive director of Texas Alliance for Life, encouraged everyone present to sign a petition being circulated to end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.

Cathy Kerr of the Silent No More Awareness campaign shared her powerful witness on behalf of the women and men whose lives have been devastated by abortion.

Elizabeth McClung rallied the crowds to continued involvement in the highly successful and Texas-born 40 Days for Life campaign, calling abortion a “social justice issue” that cannot be ignored.

The invocation and benediction were offered, respectively, by Msgr. W. Michael Mulvey, Bishop-elect of the Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi and administrator of the Diocese of Austin, and Pastor David Cassidy, senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church.

The Texas Rally for Life commemorates the anniversary of the tragic Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion through all nine months of pregnancy in the United States.
